Although it's possible to charge and drive the Lightning using only a 120-volt outlet, it can take a lot of time on the charger and not a lot of time on the road. How Many Miles Does a Charge Last on the 2023 Ford Lightning? The Ford Lightning has two battery options that feed its motors: one is a standard-range battery, and the other is an extended-range battery. The standard-range battery has 98 kWh of usable capacity, which is good for 230 miles of range, while the extended-range battery has a massive 131 kWh of usable capacity. With this type of battery, the F-150 Lightning offers 320 miles of range, or 300 if you opt for the top-trim Platinum. How Long Does It Take To Charge the Ford Lightning With a DC Fast Charger The quickest way to fully charge EVs is by using a DC fast charger. With the Ford 150 Lightning, you can go from 15% to around 80% in less than an hour. With the Ford Lightning standard edition, the charging time would take around 45 minutes, while the extended-range version of the EV would only take about 40 minutes to go from 15% to about 80%. Unfortunately, you can't install a Level 3 DC charger at your home, as it uses a 440-volt DC power supply, which makes it dangerous in most residential houses. However, you can find one of these chargers at various EV charging stations. How To Find Charging Stations When on the Road? A few years ago, finding an EV charging station was no easy feat. Fortunately, today, it's easier than ever to find charging stations near you. You can use different websites or mobile apps, such as FordPass or Google Maps, to quickly find a charging station in your area. If you're a member of an EV charging network, you likely already have an application on your smartphone to find compatible charging stations near you. The US Department of Energy also has a locator system (available on their website) you can use to find charging stations in your area. The system is also helpful if you have a car using biodiesel or other alternative fuels. Why Do EVs Charge More Slowly After 80%? An EV that charges more slowly after 80% is normal. It does this because the EV's charger is restricting the battery's charging speed to protect it from overheating. An EV's battery will charge at a higher speed when it's almost empty, as the charger is providing the complete current when the battery's percentage is lower. When it reaches around 80%, however, the current that the battery takes will decrease. This is because the heat your battery generates at this stage increases, unlike at the onset of charging. At this point, the battery's ions need stabilization. Hence, the charger goes back to slow charging for the remaining 20%. This allows your battery to perform at the optimal level and preserves its health and lifespan. Ford recommends not keeping your EV charged at 100%, as it can reduce your battery's lifespan. With lithium-ion batteries, you can keep them charged at around 60% to 80% of their maximum charge; this is where the ions and electrons are usually balanced, which can extend your battery's lifetime usage. Ford also recommends not going into deep discharge, which means you should try to stay above 20%. Going below this level can damage your battery if done repeatedly. Does Ford Own Shelby? Ford has worked closely with Shelby since Carroll Shelby established the company in 1962. However, Ford doesn't own a high-performance manufacturer. Shelby American has remained an independent company throughout its existence. Although Shelby is perhaps best known for its modified Mustang sports cars, the relationship with Ford never went beyond a strong partnership between the two companies. Carroll Shelby also enjoyed a close friendship with the head of Dodge, Lee Iacocca, during the 1970s and 80s, which led to a working relationship with the automaker. Today, Shelby American operates a facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. Located close to the famous Las Vegas Strip and the airport, the site contains a museum to provide visitors with a historic overview of the American racing brand. In addition, this is where Shelby technicians work on modifying V-8 supercharged engines to create Shelby's Super Snake engines. The name pays tribute to one of the first racing cars built by Shelby — the Ford Shelby Cobra. Who Was Carroll Shelby? Born in Texas in the early 1920s, Carroll Shelby was a standout pilot in the Air Force during World War II. Due to his impressive talents, he was prevented from going into combat. Although he requested to join in the fighting, it was common practice to retain the best pilots to train new aircrews for the US Air Force. Reports about Shelby's time in the military note that his favorite plane to fly was the B26 bomber because of its remarkable straight-line speed. After leaving the military, Shelby retained his passion for traveling at a fast pace. He participated in and won a series of sports car races during the early 1950s, and his talents were quickly noticed. After he won 12 races between 1952 and 1954, the Aston Martin race team signed Shelby to a contract. During the years that followed, Shelby took part in leading races worldwide. The pinnacle of his career came in 1959 when he won the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Shelby was subsequently diagnosed with a heart problem, forcing him to retire from racing in 1960. But he used a lot of what he'd learned as a race car driver and his entrepreneurial spirit to establish his own car brand two years later. Shelby American was the platform he needed to construct the Ford Shelby Cobra. This American race car icon triumphed at the World Manufacturers' GT Championship in 1965, becoming the first American-made race car to do so. The Shelby Cobra was also popular on less prominent racetracks across America. It went head-to-head with and often beat the Chevy Corvette and Dodge Challenger. Carroll Shelby continued to be involved in the company he founded into the new century. He died in 2012, having lived to see Ford's decision to bring the Shelby Mustang back into its lineup in 2005. Does Shelby Have an Electric Vehicle? The simple answer is not yet, but concept vehicles suggest one could be in the works. In 2021, Ford took a concept for a Shelby Mustang Mach-E GT to the Las Vegas Auto Show. Although the concept didn't indicate the output of the proposed high-performance electric SUV, the design was shown with Shelby dampers and carbon springs. We'll have to wait and see whether Shelby will make this concept a reality in the coming years. However, Ford is likely to support this transition considerably. The automaker has already introduced an electric version of its iconic truck, the F-150 Lightning, and is rolling out hybrid and electric versions of some of its most popular SUVs. What's Next for Ford-Shelby Cooperation? Shelby continues to produce the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, a high-performance version of Ford's premier sports car. The GT500 has a 5.2-liter V-8 engine under the hood that produces an incredible 760 horsepower to move this coupe off the line at a tremendous pace. Car and Driver's zero to 60 mph test recorded the GT500's time at 3.4 seconds, beating out the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro. Ford revived the Shelby Mustang in 2005, and the GT badge was added soon afterward. The Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 is a two-door coupe with seating for four people. It features rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Inside the cabin, the GT500 shares many of its design and infotainment features with the standard Mustang. There are several Shelby-specific design features, including the front seats. If that's not enough power for you, auto Ford Shelby also produces a limited line of so-called "Code Red" Mustang GT500s that are not designed for the road. Shelby is currently producing 30 units of this vehicle, powered by an astonishing Super Snake V-8 engine that generates 1,300 horsepower. In addition to the Mustang GT 500, Shelby also produces modified Ford trucks assembled in Indiana. The Shelby F-150 can generate up to 775 horsepower, thanks to the powertrain modifications carried out by race car specialists. The Lightning has one electric motor for the front wheels and another for the rear wheels to give it four-wheel drive. These two motors can shift the F-150 Lightning at an incredible speed, dashing zero to 60 mph in as little as 4.5 seconds. The standard Lightning has a driving range of 230 miles when fully charged. You can increase this to 320 miles if you upgrade to the larger battery pack offered in the extended-range model. The Lightning's towing abilities are also impressive. The standard setup can tow 5,000 pounds, while the extended version can achieve 10,000 pounds when paired with the Max Trailer Tow Package. Inside the cabin, the Lightning offers seating for five people. Unlike some gas-powered pickups, the F-150 Lightning is available in only one cab and cargo bed configuration. The Crew cab offers plenty of headroom and legroom for adults in both rows, while the cargo bed measures 5 feet 7 inches in length. Mustang Mach-E Ford offers this all-electric crossover in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive (AWD) models. The rear-wheel-drive setup has an electric motor on the rear wheels, delivering an output of 266 horsepower and a driving range of 247 miles with the standard battery pack. All-wheel drive adds a second motor to the vehicle and reduces the driving range slightly to 224 miles. The Mach-E's extended battery pack can boost your driving range to 303 miles in rear-wheel drive or 277 miles with AWD. If you use a 240-volt outlet to charge your vehicle, also known as a Level 2 charger, it'll take between 12 and 15 hours to fully charge the Mach-E. You can access 240-volt chargers at a public charging site or by installing one at your home. The Mach-E has a spacious cabin for you and your passengers to ride in. Both rows of seats are well suited for tall passengers, and there's also equipment for installing child seating in the rear row. Behind the second row of seats, you'll find over 29 cubic feet of cargo space. If you're transporting bulkier items, you can fold down the rear row to open up close to 60 cubic feet in your storage area. While the F-150 Lightning impresses with its towing abilities, the Mach-E stands out with an impressive infotainment system. Even base models have a huge 15.5-inch touchscreen paired with a six-speaker stereo. Other features include wireless device charging, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster. You can upgrade to a 10-speaker stereo for even better performance. Ford E-Transit The E-Transit van is an all-electric version of the Transit commercial van. Ford aimed the first versions of this van at commercial cargo carriers, but some reports have suggested that it may offer a passenger version in the coming years. The E-Transit has a driving range of 126 miles. Its power train consists of an electric motor and a 67 kWh battery pack that puts out 266 horsepower.
