The big chill of 2013-14 was a bone-numbing, snowfall laden event for the Northeast that added a new word to our vocabulary: Polar vortex. Following this historical weather event, customers told Ford they wanted cold weather features available on their vehicles. Ford listened.

They started by forming the Ford extreme climate team that met with market-specific customers not only in North America but around the globe to better understand what drivers in harsh weather conditions need and expect.

Ford’s extreme climate team hosted a customer clinic in Edmonton, Alberta, to hear what drivers had to say about winter driving challenges they faced. Nicole Mazur, product development quality supervisor for Ford Canada and export markets shared their findings saying, “What our customers in Canada told us is simple – heat everything! They wanted better access to some of the cold weather features Ford was already offering on its higher-series vehicles.”

Mazur and Melissa DeLuka, her job share partner, spearheaded North American input into Ford’s extreme climate team saying “Sometimes, it’s about comfort, but other times it’s more than that. What much of the United States experienced with the polar vortex is what northern Canada gets every year.”

Customer feedback indicated that drivers wanted a heated steering wheel, heated mirrors, seats and windshield wiper de-icer as standard equipment. From there, #Ford got to work to incorporate winter features into their cars and trucks to satisfy their customers. One example is SYNC Connect on the 2017 Ford Escape that provides drivers with an even better remote start and vehicle pre-conditioning capabilities.
