The 2023 Ford Explorer Fuel Tank Capacity and Maximum Range
The 2023 Ford Explorer has eight trim options and two hybrid options, and just like the 2022 model, each offers something a little different. The 2023 Explorer gasoline tank capacity by trim level is as follows:
- The Base, XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, and Limited fuel tank capacity is 17.9 gallons.
- The Limited Hybrid and Platinum Hybrid models use an electric battery and an 18-gallon tank.
- The ST, King Ranch, and Platinum tanks hold 20.2 gallons.
It’s worth noting that the 17.9-gallon standard tank on five trim levels is the same size as the Toyota Highlander’s, but with that model, it’s the only tank size available. According to the manufacturer’s estimates, a single tank of gas will allow the Ford Explorer to drive up to 483.3 miles on the highway or 358 miles in the city. These numbers apply consistently, regardless of tank size. Keep in mind that driving is usually a mix of city and highway environments and high- and low-traffic areas.
The 2023 Ford Explorer Engine Options and Fuel Economy
The new Ford Explorer SUV lineup has three distinctive and powerful engines available to choose from. Whichever you select, you’ll receive strong capability ratings to handle all that comes your way. The Base, XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, and Limited models have a 2.3-liter EcoBoost I-4 engine that produces 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque and pairs with the 17.9-gallon fuel tank. Most Brewster, New York, drivers will find the Explorer equally enjoyable during busy city driving and highway cruising.
The ST, King Ranch, and Platinum powertrains have a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine with auto-start-stop technology. It generates 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque using direct injection and turbocharging and has a 20.2-gallon tank, the largest available. The 2023 Explorer Limited Hybrid and Platinum Hybrid models’ 3.3-liter V-6 Hybrid engines have an 18-gallon fuel tank and generate 318 hp and 322 lb-ft of torque.
The EPA fuel economy estimates for both the all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive Explorer are 19 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg overall with the 2.3-liter I-4 engine. The 3.0-liter V-6 engine rates 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, with a still-great 21 mpg combined. The rear-wheel-drive hybrid is the most economical version, with 27 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 28 mpg combined.
In general, the Explorer is one of the most efficient SUVs of its class, and going all-wheel drive has little to no effect on the ratings. It’s worth noting, however, that the Explorer Timberline gets 27 mpg combined instead of 24 with the I-4, thanks to its higher profile, more aggressive tires, and other performance features.
The 2023 Ford Explorer Towing and Payload Ratings
From the city to the wilderness, the 2023 Explorer SUV can take you there in style, especially with the Class IV Trailer Tow Kit. Available with the 3.0-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine, this gives the all-new Ford Explorer a maximum tow rating of 5,600 pounds. The 2023 edition can also pull up to 5,300 pounds with the standard turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost I-4, while the hybrid powertrain can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
The 2023 Ford Explorer Performance Features
There’s much more to the Explorer’s performance than power and efficiency. For example, the 10-speed automatic transmission on every powertrain supports smoother gearshifts and aids in delivering a wide power range. Standard trailer sway control works with AdvanceTrac with roll stability control, significantly reducing the risk of tilting with top-heavy goods by adjusting brake application and engine throttle.
The Terrain Management System for 2WD and Intelligent 4WD Explorer models can help on any journey. Up to seven different drive modes, including Eco Mode, Tow/Haul, Sport, Deep Snow/Sand (4WD only), Slippery, and Normal, are selectable, depending on your choice of trim. Go from automatic shifting to a manual transmission instantly using the optional paddle shifters.
The 2023 Ford Explorer Safety Features
The 2023 Ford Explorer’s standard Co-Pilot360 safety features include automatic emergency braking, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning, lane-keeping assistance, automatic high beams, and a rearview camera with built-in lens washer, excellent for tough winters and foggy nights. All 2023 Explorer models come standard with side-wind stabilization to help you maintain control of your vehicle when dealing with strong or perpendicular winds. Adaptive cruise control is an additional feature on the Co-Pilot Assist+ package. On higher trim levels, you can even add reverse automatic braking.
